Elsa Howell is a ballad singer, songwriter, and old-time guitarist from Roanoke, Virginia. She grew up attending old-time jams and singing at fiddlers conventions with her family and studied traditional Appalachian ballad singing with her mentor, Elizabeth LaPrelle. She is influenced by the flora and fauna of her native region and traditional song structures. Elsa is drawn to songs with winding, haunted melodies and narrative lyrics, highlighting the importance of music as a storytelling tool in her own work.
