“Signs and Wonders,” the first full length album by ‘Jonathan Vassar and The Speckled Bird’ finds the group embarking upon a full-scale pastoral epic. After displaying an acuity for beautiful, simple arrangements on the ep “The Fire Next Time,” the four member ensemble achieves full orchestral mastery on this latest Triple Stamp Records release.
While the songs still have a folk sensibility, the group extends its eclectic interpretation of the genre to include references ranging from Baroque Pop to Southern Gothic.
The songs’ lyrics continue to illustrate a bucolic world of ambiguity. Although the underlying darkness is more prevalent than previously, Vassar maintains an exquisite balance by juxtaposing themes of violence and fear with moments of mysticism and enlightenment.
The Speckled Bird’s musical contribution to Vassar’s songs is no longer accompaniment, but rather the beating, bleeding heart of the opus.”
