In honor of legendary folk singer Pete Seeger's 90th birthday, a wave of gatherings will be held to recognize his place among America's most well-known performers. Remember Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)" and "Turn, Turn, Turn!"? While a number of similar events will take place across the country, Richmond will host its own "For Pete's Sake, Sing" hootenanny Sunday from 6 to 11 p.m. at The Camel club, 1621 W. Broad St. Ron Gentry, organizer of the Richmond show, said: "A hootenanny is pretty much a free-wheeling music event. And there are just two basic requirements: a variety of performers and audience participation." Gentry is active in many of the old-time jams around the area and has long been a part of the bluegrass music scene. Included in the performance will be: # Ron and Friends: Gentry and a number of his "jammin'" buddies will kick off the event with a taste of music that can be heard from living rooms to campsites to various music festivals. # George Turman: Referred to by many as Richmond's "Dean of Folk Singers," Turman is best known in the region for his work with "Among Friends," a group of musicians who come together once a year for concerts. # Jackie Frost Trio: Courthouse Records/Fieldcrest Music recording artist Jackie Frost has gained national and international acclaim for her voice and style. The trio has performed at coffeehouses, private parties and concert halls in the Richmond area, as well as on TV, radio and with the Richmond Symphony. # Amy Ferebee: Based in the Tidewater area, Ferebee has been active in folk music for 25 years, performing from Washington to Dallas. # Sheryl Warner and the Southside Homewreckers: This trio delivers classic blues and ragtime with a modern edge and is on the artist roster of JAMInc, an organization that promotes nonmainstream music through education and performance. # Mark Campbell and The Southern Harmony Reunion: In 2008, Campbell was named the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities' Master Fiddler. He will be joined by Peter Bigour and his family, along with Debbie Morris of this original late-1960s singing group. They will perform songs of The Weavers, of which Seeger was a member. Other performers will include vocal harmony teacher Sheridan Malone, Becky Taylor and Open Fire, and local singer-actor Cary Jackson. There is no cost to attend the event, but the organizers are requesting that hootenanny-goers donate $10, which will go toward providing assistance to members of the Richmond folk-music community.
